The Water Department and Other Dangerous Organizations

"All right, Dirk, let's sit you up." The doctor helped Dirk lean forward. "Tell me, how are you feeling?"

Dirk smiled at the doctor. "Actually, pretty well. I don't know what you put in that applesauce you insist on feeding us every lunch, but it is very therapeutic. And I tip my hat to the chef for making the meal taste less like shoe leather and more like leather still on the cow. Nice touch."

"Smart-ass. Hospital food isn't supposed to taste good. We don't want assholes like you sticking around too long." The doctor put a stethoscope up to Dirk's chest. "Take a deep breath for me and then let it out slowly."

A woman behind them cleared her throat. "Sorry to interrupt the witty banter, boys, are you having a moment, or can a lady join you?"

"Thank God, my savior has arrived. Carrie, I can't tell you what awful things the doc did to me." Dirk faked a pleading glance.

"Oh yeah, did he make you a eunuch or something?"

The doctor put his stethoscope back around his neck. "Worse, tonight the cafeteria is making meatloaf."

Carrie scrunched up her nose in obvious disgust. "Ewww, my cooking is far less likely to kill you."

"Dirk, as your doctor, I can't explain to you what happened. I only know that we are damn lucky you are still alive. I want Carrie to keep a close eye on you over the next few days. If anything seems out of the ordinary, you need to call me." The doctor scrunched up his forehead at Dirk. "In my twenty years of practicing medicine, I can tell you there have been a handful of times someone on the other side must be looking out for one patient or another."

"You have no idea how right you are." Dirk opened the small duffel bag Carrie brought with clothes from the house. "Well, let's see what she brought for me to wear. Honey, a leather dog collar and chaps? It's after Labor Day."

The doctor shook his head at Dirk.

"Yep," Carrie said, "he's fine, Doctor. Back to his same old self."

Dirk dressed. "How's the investigation coming?"

"Forensics is having a field day with this one. There is evidence all over Vance's apartment. Collins didn't go gentle on him."

"Carrie, you really have no idea if Collins did this or not. For all you know, it could be some other lowlife with a score to settle. Forensics can put them in the same apartment, but you have no idea who did whatever ass kicking."

Carrie frowned at his comment. "Well, either way, hair follicles place Collins in the apartment. I have to pull a few extra duty days for letting the boy out of my sight. The inquiry board pointed out that I screwed up by leaving him without adult supervision. My biggest task right now is to put the little ass weasel behind bars."

Dirk remembered Carrie mentioning Collin's martial arts training. He swallowed concerns about the possibility of her pursuing someone with black belt level training in martial arts.
